But before we even got in career questions, we are itching her one thing to ask: thoughts on the Oscars! "Again, Lupita Nyong'o stole the show!" Says Elaine. "She always managed the perfect balance between simplicity, charm, and all-out glamor to strike. I like the subtle, peachy Sheens on her cheeks and lips. It was just enough for her to Nairobi blue "Cinderella-inspired Prada dress to complement. "
Elaine and actually had the privilege to see Lupita's flawless complexion up close and personal. "I sat next to her on a plane from London to New York recently and she mentioned that she eats gluten-free," she said. "It was one of her secrets from this earth to be burned."
OK, now that we Oscars burning question on our chest, read on to find out about Elaine's savvy career advice, what a typical day in the office dr burt is like, and her first job was fun!
What was your first job? I started as an assistant to the editor-in-chief at Ebony magazine. She took me under her wing and gave me opportunities to take on greater responsibilities very early in my career. I eventually transitioned into a role where I built the beauty and style department there and learned a ton along the way. But my first job in life? I was dancing mascot dr burt wearing dr burt a bird suit at the local hometown buffet. Embarrassing, but true. Who are some of your career heroes? every boss I've ever had challenged me, me, believed dr burt in me, and lead by example. Amy Astley (Teen Vogue's dr burt -redakteur-in-chief) had such a clear vision for the magazine, she is approachable, and she takes an incredible amount of confidence in her editors. This creates a work environment that empowers and really rewarding as a creative person. My first boss, Harriette Cole -Who was more like a fairy godmother in the industry remains a good friend and mentor to this day. What is a typical day like for you? No two days are the same. This is the best part! I divide my time between writing and editing copy, meeting dr burt with as many as 15 Beauty brands week to learn about new releases, filming TV segments or new episodes of Teen Vogue's video channel, working on set for photo shoots ... or racing to catch a flight to interview Rihanna in Barbados (clear that last one is nothing but an ordinary day!). News: trendsetters at work: Marie Claire
Describe your office decor. What was your inspiration? My office is definitely an extension of my personality. I spend more time here than elsewhere, so it is important that it reflects my style and it's an inspiring dr burt place to think. Although it is admittedly impossible to keep clean with a gazillion beauty products coming in and out all the time. I like products that I test on a "keypad" (more like a tray I found on the free table heroically make my product look less lazy landfill than it actually is.) I love inspiration tears in a mood wall. And I love every note I ever received from readers, co-workers and friends that my PR smile within reach. I'm dr burt guilty of hoarding candles and about five million scent bottles. They are literally in every nook and cranny! But I like to think that they for some Zen and a bit of luxury dr burt in the space. Do I sound like an episode of hoarders do not? List five things on your desk right now. An empty Juice Generation dr burt bottle, sparkly nail polish from Deborah Lippman, my recorder, a layout for my favorite celeb shoot I have ever done (shameless dr burt plug? Yes. Stay tuned for the May issue!), And a candle Diptyque Roses with some fire left in his name.
What do you usually wear to work? It depends on my mood and on the calendar, but I always keep an extra pile of shoes on hand. Conducted under my desk and ready in a moment's notice is my patent leather booties Sportmax (the perfect, all-occasion dr burt shoe), nude Valentino pumps (easy outfit for major upgrade, impromptu meetings), fur-lined Jimmy Choo rain boots (to face the vortex), Sabah flats (for train commuters), Tkees Sandals (for the rare after-work appointment Pedi) and Adidas Spring blades (for late-night dr burt workouts).
What are your favorite stores to buy clothes for work? It really runs the gamut. I always love stopping dr burt by to see what Marc Jacobs. I would buy pieces of Bergdorf or Barneys and then hit Zara or Topshop for the rest. What is the best piece of career advice dr burt you ever received? Bite off more than you can chew. And then chew as fast as you can. New
